Professional Speakers Use Improvisation to Create Connections NSA/NC

Professional Speakers Use Improvisation to Create Connections

Speaking professionally takes a lot of practice, skill, and perseverance. It also takes understanding technology and knowing how to use equipment to get your message across. But what happens when equipment fails? Or if an audience does not respond as anticipated? This 80-90 minute session will support speakers in thinking on their feet, creating connections, and learning tips to handle things that don’t always go according to script!

Speaker’s Academy is a 9-month live program, that launches in September of each year with monthly meetings for current, emerging & aspiring professional speakers!  This event is for Speaker’s Academy students only. If you are interested in having Lisa facilitate a similar program for your organization or group, please reach out to her directly.

SUMMARY
With multiple generations in the workplace, enhancing communication that supports all generations is essential. This session will bring awareness to the different communication needs and styles of each generation and practical solutions to support breaking down barriers and improving relations.

Due to people living and working longer, organizations are seeing multiple generations in the workplace resulting in communication challenges. In their piece, Macon & Artley point out “Many organizations in today’s business world are comprised of four generations of employees with ages that range over 60 years. If businesses do not address this generational conflict, they are subjecting themselves to lower productivity, higher turnover, and frustrated employees, which will ultimately lead to reduced profits.

Improvisation supports bringing a deeper awareness to communication styles – building listening and a “YES AND” mindset which supports individuals in being more open to ideas. Creating an understanding and fostering an appreciation for what each generation contributes minimizes tensions and works toward building a thriving culture instead of one that is ‘us against them.’ We will cover:

Strengthening capacity for effective and active listening
Understanding how to apply understanding of generation styles of working/communicating
Developing techniques for building a risk-tolerant culture that is open to collaboration

Bridging the Generational Divide Through Leadership-Essential Small Business Seminar

Diversity is something we strive for in most workplaces. Some companies do better than others. When the topic of leadership and diversity are discussed, it is often in terms of cultural awareness. Another topic that is getting recent attention is age diversity.
The recession kept Baby Boomers in the workforce past retirement age. Now, people are staying in the workforce for a variety of reasons beyond simple necessity.
We are living longer and staying engaged keeps us healthier. Leading across four generations presents a significant challenge to leadership and how we communicate with clients,
employees, and colleagues.

In this highly interactive session we will use fun and engaging exercises to:

1. Understand key differences between each generation
2. Employ specific strategies to build on ideas so that the lines of communication stay open
3. We will identify a strategy to integrate into our own company or client facing communication plan

Change Management & Leading Change

Leading Change with Applied Improvisation

In addition to resilicieny, leading change demands confidence, agility, and openness as well as a great deal of risk tolerance. Applying the tenets of improvisation, this breakout session, facilitated by Lisa Safran, part of the full day professional development that the PMI Wine Country Chapter will be organizing, will focus on how to incorporate applied improvisation techniques when managing and leading change in the workplace. Our concentration will be on exercises that support thinking on our feet, being authentic and present in communication, and allowing ourselves to celebrate mistakes.

Tenets of Improvisation

Say Yes and add positively to the situation – Fully accept ideas and offers and add a new piece of information to serve the bigger picture. This does not mean that we have to agree with each other all the time. In fact, the most successful teams have a healthy amount of disagreement and debate. But listening and taking in all aspects of an idea before negating or offering your own idea, supports building relationships and creating healthy respect.

Stay present—Evaluate later – Staying present to each moment and refraining from planning allows for even more options and choices to make themselves known.

Make your partner look brilliant – This eliminates defensiveness. The partner can literally be a partner, or it could be a colleague, subordinate, or even the company itself.

Look for connection – Finding commonalities with others supports the building of healthy relationships. Where do you agree?

Allow yourself to be changed – By staying in the moment, we are more likely to be able to take in new information and see it as an invitation to make a new choice, inspire new ideas, and make positive changes.

Serve the bigger picture – When performing, we refer to this rule as serving the platform (story or scene). In other words, the actor makes choices to support the story as opposed to only serving his or her own need to do something special. What is the bigger picture in your life? What is the bigger picture to support the business or team?

Find the joy in failure: Be willing to make mistakes – One of key components great leaders have is the willingness to risk failure. They put themselves on the line for their vision and ideas. Be willing to make mistakes and find the joy in failure. See each mistake, not so much as a failure but the willingness to be courageous.

Yes… and there are some exercises we may play!
